چکیده

Research methods are "technique(s) for ... gathering data" (HARDING 1986) and are generally dichotomised into being either quantitative or qualitative. It has been argued that methodology has been gendered (OAKLEY 1997; 1998), with quantitative methods traditionally being associated with words such as positivism, scientific, objectivity, statistics and masculinity. In contrast, qualitative methods have generally been associated with interpretivism, non-scientific, subjectivity and femininity. These associations have led some feminist researchers to criticise (REINHARZ 1979; GRAHAM 1983; PUGH 1990) or even reject (GRAHAM & RAWLINGS 1980) the quantitative approach, arguing that it is in direct conflict with the aims of feminist research (GRAHAM 1983; MIES 1983). It has been argued that qualitative methods are more appropriate for feminist research by allowing subjective knowledge (DEPNER 1981; DUELLI KLEIN 1983), and a more equal relationship between the researcher and the researched (OAKLEY 1974; JAYARATNE 1983; STANLEY & WISE 1990). This paper considers the quantitative/qualitative divide and the epistemological reasoning behind the debate before investigating two research methods, the statistical survey and the semi-structured interview, in respect of their use to feminist researchers. It concludes by arguing that different feminist issues need different research methods, and that as long as they are applied from a feminist perspective there is no need for the dichotomous "us against them", "quantitative against qualitative" debates.

Some philosophical considerations in using mixed methods in library and information science research

Mixed methods research (MMR) has been described as the third research paradigm that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods. The mixing of research methods requires an epistemological framework that embraces the " reality " uncovered by different research methods. Three formal ontological categories are introduced for deconstructing the polarized view of reality in objectivism an...

Feminist Theory and Survey Research

Over the past three decades, feminist methodologists have hammered home one point with surprising regularity: Feminist research takes a variety of legitimate forms; there is no “distinctive feminist method of research” (Harding, 1987; see also Chafetz, 2004a, 2004b; Fonow & Cook, 2005; Hawkesworth, 2006; Hesse-Biber, 2007; Risman, Sprague, & Howard, 1993; and Sprague, 2005). And yet, to this da...

Complementary research paradigms.

methodologies operate broadly within qualitative and/or quantitative paradigms. The simplest distinction between these two is that quantitative research methods involve enumeration, whereas qualitative research methods employ qualitative (non-numerical) judgements in exploration of the phenomena being studied. Behind this simple distinction lie deep philosophical differences. Quantitative resea...

In the world of art, gender, race and social class issues were ignored traditionally and it was assumed there is a kind of human that is universal, historical, without sex and is male and white of course. From this perspective, woman was only as the subject of artistic creation and thus art has been mixed with gender. But Feminist Aesthetics increases woman value from just being a subject and d...

Revisiting the Quantitative-Qualitative Debate: Implications for Mixed-Methods Research.

Health care research includes many studies that combine quantitative and qualitative methods. In this paper, we revisit the quantitative-qualitative debate and review the arguments for and against using mixed-methods. In addition, we discuss the implications stemming from our view, that the paradigms upon which the methods are based have a different view of reality and therefore a different vie...
